Conventional oil based paint has been stamped as not environmentally friendly by the EU, and at the moment it is being phased across Europe to conform to current regulations. The paint manufacturers are responding with water based paint a.k.a. Hydro Paint, said to be a little as a tenth as toxic as conventional oil/solvent based paint, while providing the same sharp level of colour.
Oil based paints use solvents that speed the drying time and help with the smooth application and the formation of a regular paint film. These solvents are a key component in modern paint which, helps protect, preserve and give visual pleasure to everything we use today. But they have done so at a cost to our environment, as these solvents have been identified as toxic.
As the EU has placed strict guidelines on the manufacturing of these solvents (oil based paints) and set up a timetable for it to be phased out, water based paint is now the future of the painting industry. The main issue with water based paint is drying time, there is nothing to speed this process as the solvents have been removed so you have to dry your paint externally, traditionally for the best paint jobs you had to do this with oil/solvent paint anyway, however its mandatory now for high quality paint jobs.
If you paint or spray, domestically or commercially, you have to face these new changes and adapt your thinking, they are not going away and are here to stay. You need to get used to them, which isn’t a problem all in all, since, with the right equipment and the right skill, these water based paints have many an advantage over solvent/oil based paint.
